Our History
The Hotel Manfredi Suite is privileged to be housed in one of the historic buildings in the centre of Rome that have long adorned the surroundings of the beautiful and romantic Spanish Steps, the elegant salon of Tridente, Rome.
A PALAZZO OF HISTORICAL VALUE
Commissioned by Antonio d’Alibert, the building was originally constructed to house the Gran Teatro Alibert, at the time the largest theatre in Rome, inaugurated in 1718 with its first opera. Overlooking the historic and elegant Via Margutta, unfortunately it was not such a great success with the public, seeing a change of management and name in 1726 to become the Teatro delle Dame in honour of the women who were now allowed to perform on stage.
Under the ownership of the Order of Malta, many utterly successful seasons followed until a disastrous fire in 1863.
Surviving this catastrophe, the building was auctioned off in 1872 by the family of the Princes Torlonia and purchased by Baldassarre Pescanti. Whilst maintaining the original structure, the new owner completed a major renovation and transformed the Theatre into the Locanda Alibert with the annexed Stabilimento Bagni with modern spas, bringing years of great splendour to the Hotel.
Between 1881 and 1911, the building was divided into various apartments and sold to individual owners.
In 1949, Ines Manfredi-who owned a number of the apartments-decided to convert them into a family-run hotel, naming the establishment Pensione Manfredi, which counted amongst its guests numerous students from the American Loyola University of Chicago based in Rome.
In 1980, the structure passed into the hands of Cosimo and Maria Argentina who renovated it in the following years, conferring new splendour and transforming the structure into the Hotel Manfredi.
Since 1990, the Hotel has been refurbished several times and as of 2000, has been managed by three brothers of the same family: Francesco, Giovanni and Giuseppe expanded the Hotel in 2008 to become the current Hotel Manfredi Suite in Rome, conceived at the time as a true Boutique Hotel.
Today, the most recent renovations have consolidated the taste for excellence, with the quality of the furnishings, textiles and architecture fully reflecting all that is Made in Italy.
